T: There are many other beautiful Ukrainian carols. But one of them is the most famous. It is Shchedryk.

1. Look at the photo of a man and guess what this man has to do with Shchedryk. (The right answer: The man wrote Shchedryk).

2. Read the text about the composer who wrote Shchedryk.

Mykola Leontovych

Mykola Leontovych was a famous Ukrainian composer. He was born in Podillia region. He studied in Kamianets-Podilskyi seminary. Later he lived and worked in Kyiv. He was a teacher of music at the Kyiv Conservatory and the Mykola Lysenko Institute of Music.

People all over the world know Mykola Leontovych because in 1904 he wrote Shchedryk. It is a famous Christmas carol. In 1936 Peter Wilhousky made an English translation of this song. He called it Carol of the Bells.

This song is so popular that it became a soundtrack for lots of films. One of them is Home Alone. Many groups and singers like to sing this song too.
